Snowy Mt. Hood

Cooper Spur Wild & Free Coalition is a diverse affiliation of recreation, environmental, and citizen organizations working to keep the north side of Mt. Hood wild since 2002.

Our mission is to preserve and protect the biological integrity and historic nature of the north side of Mt. Hood in and around Cooper Spur from new development, increased commercial activities, high impact recreational expansion, and timber sales on public and private lands in and adjacent to those lands.

From Instagram

We asked local friends why it is important to them that Cooper Spur and the north side of the mountain remain unchanged. Here is one reason they shared:

"30 years ago I decided I wanted to live here and I'm excited it looks similar to what it did back then and I have made dear friends now and we love and explore and cherish it everyday" - Elizabeth Gaar

Why is Cooper Spur important to you?

100% of Hood River County is categorized as in severe drought conditions, with our neighbors to the east experiencing extreme drought.

Preserving our water supply as we are continuing to see the impacts of climate change is one of the primary driver's for our ongoing work to protect Mt. Hood's north side and the watershed that sustains 25% of Hood River's drinking water.

The lower Cooper Spur area contains the only remaining east-west corridor of low elevation, large tree, closed-canopy forest on the north side of Mt. Hood. This connection allows genetic exchange between old-growth populations in the widely separated Surveyor’s Ridge and Bull Run Late Successional Reserves.

Forests in the proposed development areas act as a filter for the East Fork Hood River and several of its tributaries, catching rain and allowing clear, clean, cold water to seep slowly into the streams. If Cooper Spur’s forests are logged over and developed, this continuous trickle will be replaced by periods of drought, punctuated by sudden floods of warm, polluted, muddy runoff from buildings, parking lots, and bare, broken soil.

Throwback Thursday! The Tilly Jane Ski Trail remains virtually unchanged since it was brushed out and widened in 1939. The sweeping, open vistas across Mt. Hood and nearby ridges and peaks are virtually the same as they were when past visitors experienced them. The old growth forest and open natural parkland on the ridge crest followed by the trail are intact except for the most visible feature – the clear cutting that was performed at the Cooper Spur Ski Area to create the 50-acre ski area. Other than that there are no visible areas along the trail cleared by human intervention. Instead, there is an overwhelming quiet and sense of peace that pervades the area. This sense of peace connects us with the early explorers who heard the same birds and saw the same flora and fauna without any mechanical intrusions or visibly altered landscapes.

The forest on the northeast side of Mt. Hood is a transitional area between distinct forest zones, offering a wide mix of plant species. Together we can protect this sensitive habitat.
